|The historic opening of the Theatre on 17th December, 2011 was presided over by The Vice-President and Minister of Women’s Affairs, Her Excellency Aja Dr. Isatou Njie-Saidy. The impressive dome shaped structure was built with environmentally friendly earth bricks and is one of the largest domes of its kind in The Gambia and in the Sub-Region.It is the first professional theatre in the Gambia. The massive 16 metre dome over the auditorium, second floor balcony and stage is breathtaking! Wrought iron designs depicting Gambian musical instruments and masks adorn the windows of the theatre. The state of the art theatre is resplendent with, dressing rooms, an art gallery, a roof terrace, stage lights, and a projection screen. The auditorium and balcony have a seating capacity for 300 people and is the perfect location for performances, lectures, conferences or ceremonies. The roof terrace offers a panoramic view of Kanifing during the day and a stunning sunset in the evening. It offers an unbelievable setting for cocktail parties and receptions. The Theatre was officially opened on 17th December 2011 with a performance of a Dance Drama, based on the pernicious Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade, written and directed by Janet Badjan- Young. The play, which was a UNESCO/NATCOM sponsored project, focused on the strength and endurance of Africans to survive, return to their roots and contribute to the advancement of the continent.
